The Real-Life NASCAR Move That's Straight From A Gamecube Game

Video games might mirror real life at times, but real life doesn't often copy video games; however, a recent move by NASCAR driver Ross Chastain stunned fans and professionals alike. On October 30, 2022, Chastain hugged the wall of the track, picked up speed, passed several cars, and made his way near the front of the pack.
The move essentially required Chastain to ride against the wall, avoiding having to slow down to navigate the inner ring of the course. After the race, interviewers were quick to hunt down Chastain, who explained the inspiration behind the move: “I played a lot of 'NASCAR 2005' on the GameCube, which I had growing up. […] I never knew if it would actually work.”
Despite the danger, the maneuver worked, and gave Chastain a shot at moving ahead in the competition by propelling him from 10th place to 5th. While it seemed improvised, Chastain consulted his team before attempting it. Many enjoyed the stunt, joking that fans may see "Mario Kart" style tactics in future races.
