We Now Know What The Canceled Marvel MMO Would Have Looked Like
Daybreak's planned Marvel-themed MMO project recently got the RIP treatment when parent company Enad Global 7 (EG7) announced that the developer had canceled the game's production for the second time in four years and had decided to reallocate its resources into other projects. According to a press release, this was no small project, as Enad Global 7 was apparently willing to invest in excess of $50 million into the Marvel-flavored project, essentially making it a fully fledged triple-A title. These lofty ambitions certainly painted a good picture. However, fans were never treated to any actual looks at the product.
Through both of its development cycles, Daybreak was extremely tight-lipped about the Marvel MMO. Even after the project re-entered development in 2021 after being canceled in 2018, nothing in the way of gameplay or a narrative was shown. There wasn't so much as a teaser trailer released to build up some hype. Instead, Marvel fans had to use their imagination and come up with their own ideas for what the project would ultimately look like. Days after its second cancellation was announced, fans are finally getting a glimpse into what the project may have looked like had it been completed.
Screenshots show Marvel MMO Character customization options
Posting on his Artstation profile, UI, UX, and motion designer Ramiro Galan recently posted select screenshots from the Marvel MMO project to his online portfolio. The screenshots aren't anything pertaining to gameplay, but they do show that the game had a character creation option that would allow players to make their own Marvel hero. The art also gave fans a peek at what the game's art style would've been like, with Galan saying that the "[e]mphasis was on rich and vibrant colours with stylistic tones that pay homage to 'Spider-Man Into the Spiderverse,'" implying that the game would've doubled down on its comic book roots. To give the game even more of a comic book flair, comic fonts and sound effects littered the screen.
In addition to creating their own hero, players would have also been able to choose some cool options such as their main superpowers as well as their allegiance, be it for the Avengers, S.H.I.E.L.D, the X-Men, or the Fantastic Four. This alludes to there possibly being factions within the MMO universe. It's all quite interesting and even if there's nothing currently out there that shows gameplay, the concept itself seems to have been intriguing enough to at least draw some attention.
