Call Of Duty Warzone's New Event Isn't Getting The Reaction They Hoped For
For a free-to-play battle royale game, a constant flux of new unlockables, content, and events is paramount to not only retaining the player base but also attracting new players. This is how games like "Fortnite" and "Apex Legends" move the merchandise and create a sense of urgency for players to stay involved throughout the game's life cycle. The same applies to a game like "Call of Duty: Warzone", Activision's foray into the free-to-play battle royale genre.
Recently, Activision announced "Operation Monarch," a limited-time event based upon the "Godzilla vs. Kong" film and its contained fictional universe. "Operation Monarch" will run from May 11 through May 25 — a total of two weeks — with feature film-related content and appearances from Godzilla and King Kong themselves. This event came after leaks all but confirmed the two kaijus' involvement in a future "Warzone" event. Unfortunately, the "Warzone" fanbase doesn't seem to be as thrilled as Activision would hope. As a matter of fact, it seems the reactions to this limited-time event have more so reflected frustration instead of excitement.
Warzone fans are frustrated with Activision's approach
Longtime fans of the "Call of Duty" franchise have been very critical of the series' most recent installments. "Call of Duty: Vanguard" has been subject to tons of criticism regarding the prevalence of cheating even before its official release, whereas "Call of Duty: Warzone" has garnered contempt from its player base because of the inclusion of operators such as legendary rapper Snoop Dogg while the gameplay remains relatively untouched. In response to "Operation Monarch," fans of "Warzone" echoed these same sentiments.
In response to the launch trailer for "Operation Monarch," some called for Activision and Raven Software to instead focus resources on "fixing" the game as opposed to hosting huge limited-time events. Others were frustrated with "Call of Duty" in general because they perceived the games as moving further away from their realistic roots. "Not hyped at all," one user on Twitter said in regards to the event. "I miss the realistic campaign from mw. I won't even play this event."
On Reddit, some players were critical of both Godzilla and King Kong's actual involvement when it comes to gameplay. "The two of them randomly attack somewhere, different place for each," one Redditor said. "You shoot them and they f*** off for a few minutes then come back. I make it out to seem a bit captivating. It's not. It's really not."
