The Lost Easter Eggs You Probably Missed In Batman: Arkham City
There are a lot of reasons to look back on "Batman: Arkham City" with reverence. The title exists as one of the best video game adaptations of the caped crusader, charging players with taking up the cowl and delivering justice to Gotham. It is a critically praised open-world action-adventure that helped redefine what superhero games could be. On top of its stellar gameplay, it boasts an engaging story with as many well-written twists and turns as any reader could expect out of an iconic "Batman" comic.
While "Batman: Arkham City" is often remembered for these elements, what about that surreal moment when the Joker went on a rant about "Lost?" Believe it or not, there's actually more than one "Lost" Easter egg in "Batman: Arkham City," and though they're easy to miss, there's a specific reason why the once popular ABC drama is in the spotlight.
The Joker wasn't happy with Lost's ending
While "Batman: Arkham City" features the Joker extensively, there's one conversation in particular where the villain directly references "Lost," though it's something only viewers of the show's finale are likely to understand. In a conversation with Batman via a TV screen, the Joker says, "Well here's the thing, answers don't give you everlasting satisfaction. Sometimes you need to brace yourself for disappointment. No, think about it. Imagine your favorite TV show. You've been through it all, the ups, the downs, the crazy coincidences, and then BANG, they tell you what it's all about. Would you be happy? Does it make sense? How come it all ended in a church?"
Though the Joker offers the most apparent "Lost" reference, he's not the only character that's clued in on the show's existence. Players patrolling Gotham can also stumble upon random bits of dialogue from goons trying to make sense of how the show ended. In one such instance, an NPC asks, "Do they ever explain what the island was?"
Mark Hamill and Paul Dini may have added the Lost reference
The Joker's words may go right over the heads of those who never saw "Lost" to its end, however, viewers that stayed tuned through the finale likely perked up at the mention of a church. While the ending of "Lost" is still debated for its merit, the show definitely concludes in that location.
Though "Batman: Arkham City" delivers a cheeky poke at ABC's former hit TV series, some players may wonder why "Lost" of all shows became the center of the joke. For one, the game's co-writer, notable DC Comics writer Paul Dini, wrote an episode of "Lost." According to at least one Redditor, the Joker's voice actor, the illustrious Mark Hamill, was also a major "Lost" fan. The two could have bonded over their shared experience with the uber-popular series and opted to sneak in a little homage delivered in a way only the Joker could.
