Here Are Your Free May 2022 PS Plus Games
The month of May could be the last of its kind for PlayStation users with Sony recently confirming that beginning in June, it will be merging PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now into an all-new subscription service that will be divided into tiers. Things won't change much for players already subscribed to PS Plus, as they will be grandfathered into the new service's Essential tier, but the inclusion of added benefits — such as a collection of up to 400 PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 games — could change the complexion of the service forever. Until then, PS Plus subscribers have one more month of basic offerings that should keep them busy, including a few select free games.
April boasted some pretty fun titles for PlayStation Plus subscribers to choose from. Be it experiencing the remake of a classic in "SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated," getting addicted to "Slay the Spire," or giving "Hood: Outlaws & Legends" another shot, PS Plus subscribers had a diverse and unique selection of titles available to them for free, outside of the subscription fee itself. For the month of May, PS Plus players will be granted free access to an even more eclectic trio of games, be it in the sports, action RPG, or roguelike genres.
FIFA 22
First up on the list of free games coming to PlayStation Plus for the month of May is the popular and controversial soccer game "FIFA 22." Boasting several competitive modes such as Ultimate Team, Volta, and Pro Clubs and even a comprehensive single-player experience via Career Mode, "FIFA 22" remains the best option on the market if one wishes to replicate the magic seen during high-profile broadcasts. Though the game's reliance on loot boxes microtransactions via its Ultimate Team mode remains a source of contention for many fans of the series, "FIFA 22" is still a solid game for anyone looking to scratch that soccer itch.
PlayStation Plus subscribers who install "FIFA 22" will be granted several goodies when it comes to Ultimate Team, including a pack that grants them 11 players as well as an Icon Moments Loan Player Pick which will give them temporary ownership of one of the game's several Icon players. Due to there being two editions of the game — one for the next-gen and another for the old — PlayStation Plus subscribers who still play on both the PS5 and PS4 will have to install "FIFA 22" individually on each console.
Tribes of Midgard
Another game PS Plus subscribers will have the option of choosing from is "Tribes of Midgard." A hybrid of an action RPG and survival game, the plot within "Tribes of Midgard" draws heavily from Norse mythology as players control Einherjar, a Viking in possession of the seed of Yggdrasil, who must protect it from the clutches of evil beings while also keeping it alive using the souls of fallen enemies. Boasting a procedurally generated world, the game also has a day-night cycle. During the daytime, players will be tasked with fortifying their settlements and collecting resources, but come nightfall, enemies will attack the player with gusto and attempt to destroy the seed of Yggdrasil. Furthermore, the game has a co-op mode for those who aren't too keen on going at it alone.
Upon its release, "Tribes of Midgard" was subject to a lukewarm reaction from both critics and players. While the game's concept and co-op mode were both praised by critics, some reviewers weren't a fan of the game's constant resource gathering and found it to be too difficult when playing solo. Despite its drawbacks, many have called "Tribes of Midgard" addicting and fun. So if you're looking for a title that can provide a bit more meat on the bone and have a PS Plus subscription, this one might be worth a look.
Curse of the Dead Gods
Considered to be one of the most underappreciated games released in 2021, Passtech Games' roguelike and dungeon crawler "Curse of the Dead Gods" might be the best title available for PS Plus subscribers in May. Similar to games like "Hades" in terms of style and gameplay, "Curse of the Dead Gods" sees the player control an adventurer as they explore three separate dungeons in search of valuables while combating powerful enemies. Like "Tribes of Midgard," all of the dungeons in "Curse of the Dead Gods" are procedurally generated, which offers players a different experience for each playthrough.
With robust gameplay that allows players to combine curses for unique attacks and speaks to the perils of greed, "Curse of the Dead Gods" has received a positive reception since its release and has been lauded for the challenges it presents. This is a great time to try out a sleeper hit.
