The Star Wars Reference Hidden In Final Fantasy VI
A long time ago in a galaxy not far away at all, the original "Star Wars" was released. Not only would it go on to gain millions of fans and oodles of sequels, spinoffs, and adaptations, but it would become a constant source for fun easter eggs. Countless TV shows and films make cheeky references to the eponymous space opera, like these "Star Wars" Easter eggs in the MCU, which only scratch the surface. Of course, video games are no exception when it comes to appreciating George Lucas's cultural touchstone. Aside from new "Star Wars" game announcements, the gaming industry wears its "Star Wars" love on its sleeves.
Even the multitude of magical worlds within the "Final Fantasy" series have clever allusions to "Star Wars." Some might be easier for fans to catch like the "Final Fantasy VII" characters Biggs and Wedge being named after X-wing pilots Biggs Darklighter and Wedge Antilles, but players can miss some references entirely. One such example of an easy-to-miss "Star Wars" homage happens within 1994's "Final Fantasy 6."
Hey, Shorty
As players progress through the game, they'll eventually find themselves sneaking into the city of South Figaro as the character Locke. Locke can wear different disguises during this stealthy portion of gameplay in order to more effectively slip past guards. While sneaking around, Locke happens upon a prison cell holding the character Celes. Thankfully, the guard near Celes is one of those reliably sleep-deprived guards which allows Locke to walk right up to Celes and free her.
If Locke happens to be wearing the outfit of an imperial guard, Celes will say, "Aren't you a bit short for a soldier?" This causes Locke to respond with, "Oops! Forgot I was wearing these clothes." Fans of the original "Star Wars" film will recognize this as a similar exchange between Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker during the rescue mission on the Death Star. Upon seeing a disguised Luke Skywalker, Leia remarks, "Aren't you a little short for a stormtrooper?" Luke, being the lovable dork that he is, responds, "Huh? Oh, the uniform!" before taking off his helmet.
This fun, little reference is easy to miss for players that decide to wear something other than the armor of a soldier. If Locke were to rescue Celes wearing a merchant's outfit, Celes would instead greet him with, "What do you hope to peddle down here?" Not a reference to anything, but a valid response to seeing a merchant appear in your jail cell. While the information on the upcoming "Final Fantasy 16" is scarce, "Kingdom Hearts" fans just got the best news that "Final Fantasy" fans could enjoy as well. In fact, now that Disney owns "Star Wars," it's possible the latest "Kingdom Hearts" game could see Sora and friends venturing to that galaxy far, far away.
