The Quarry Release Date, Trailer, And Gameplay - What We Know So Far

With video game adaptations of beloved properties such as "Evil Dead: The Game" and "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" making their debuts, it seems obvious that classic horror nostalgia has become a hot commodity in the world of gaming. But adaptations aren't the only way developers and publishers are capitalizing on said nostalgia — many other games are creating horror experiences that wear their inspirations on their sleeve. "The Quarry" is one such title, being a cinematic game that draws heavy influence from classic 80s and 90s horror flicks while flaunting a star-studded cast.

Developed by Supermassive Games (of "Until Dawn" fame) and published by 2K, "The Quarry" follows a group of nine camp counselors who are left to their own devices on the final night of their stay at the fictional Hackett's Quarry. Originally planning to party the night away, things take a turn for the worst as their night of fun quickly descends into one of mere survival. But what exactly is "The Quarry" and what can gamers expect from it?

What is the release date of The Quarry?

So, when can you expect to get ahold of "The Quarry"? Luckily, pretty soon! According to its official website, "The Quarry" will be available on June 10, 2022, and pre-orders for the horror game have already gone live. Players are also being offered exclusive incentives for pre-ordering the game, including the "Horror History Visual Filter Pack", which "[tailors] the aesthetic of The Quarry to your liking by choosing from three cinematic visual filters, each replicating a different style of horror filmmaking: Indie Horror, '80s Horror, and Black-and-White Classic Horror."

The game has a deluxe edition available to consumers which features the aforementioned filter pack, as well as the "Gorefest Movie Mode," "Death Rewind Instant Access," and 80s-themed character outfits. The game's deluxe edition will also include cross-gen entitlement, allowing PlayStation and Xbox players to receive both the current and next-generation versions of the game.

Upon its release, "The Quarry" will be available for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and on the PC via Steam. On the current gen, "The Quarry" prices out at $59.99, while the next-gen version will cost $69.99. The deluxe edition of the game — which contains both current and next-gen versions, as well as the aforementioned incentives — will be listed at $79.99. (via PushSquare).

Is there a trailer for The Quarry?

The announcement trailer for "The Quarry" was released on March 17. Predictably, it plays up the game's all-star cast which includes horror favorite David Arquette ("Scream"), Ariel Winter ("Modern Family"), Justice Smith ("Detective Pikachu"), Ethan Suplee ("Remember the Titans"), and Lance Henriksen ("Alien") among others. In the trailer, "The Quarry" is clearly seen to be an ode to 80s teen horror and slasher films. Fans of "Friday the 13th" will immediately notice some parallels, thanks to the game's focus on a young group hanging out at a secluded campground.

The trailer itself is rather non-revealing. While it's obvious that things go terribly wrong, it isn't entirely clear how and why they do. However, Richard Connell's novel "The Most Dangerous Game" is mentioned in the trailer, which could imply a villainous force that hunts the counselors for sport. Many of the classic horror tropes — such as the lovestruck couple, youthful wisecracks, and foolish investigations — all make an appearance. The game shows off the likenesses of its cast, which are perhaps even more impressive and accurate than the ones seen in "Until Dawn." Oh, and it's all underscored by a slow, unsettling version of the classic campfire song "Kumbaya, My Lord," setting the perfect tone for Supermassive's next spooky thriller.

What is the gameplay like in The Quarry?

"The Quarry" is meant to be cinematic experience and a "spiritual successor" to "Until Dawn" — one of the greatest horror games of all time — so players can likely expect it to play similarly to the latter title. In an interview with IGN, game director Will Byles said that Supermassive had endeavored to emulate the "game/movie experience" in "Until Dawn" with "The Quarry." Players can probably expect plenty of quicktime events and extensive dialogue trees that will impact how the characters respond to one another.

"The Quarry" will also be a choice-based game, according to its official website, meaning there will likely be many different branching paths and alternative endings depending on the choices one makes.

Judging by the trailer's structure and presentation — as well as how "Until Dawn" was structured — "The Quarry" will likely be broken into several sections in which players control different protagonists as they look to avoid all of the deadly pitfalls and threats at Hackett's Quarry. It's currently unknown how many of the nine camp counselors will be playable and how much direct control players will have over each of their individual storylines.
