What's The Real Title Of The Breath Of The Wild Sequel?
With 2021 marking the 35th anniversary of "The Legend of Zelda" series, Nintendo has treated fans to "The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD" and additional hype for "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" sequel. While this content has left some people disappointed, industry insiders indicate that four additional "Zelda" games might be in the works, including "Wind Waker" and "Twilight Princess" remasters and remakes of "The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons" and "Oracle of Ages."
Despite these rumors, Nintendo has revealed little about its one confirmed "Zelda" installment, the follow-up to "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild." While two trailers have dropped at this point, numerous details remain up in the air, including its official 2022 release date and where it fits in the "Zelda" timeline. Perhaps the biggest mystery surrounding the sequel, however, is its true title, which prospective players have speculated on since its announcement in 2019.
Nintendo's placeholder title for the Breath of the Wild sequel
In June, Nintendo offered an explanation as to why it won't reveal the "Breath of the Wild" sequel's title yet. Namely, the company wants to avoid extensive analysis of the game's subtitle, which Bill Trinen of Nintendo Treehouse told IGN will "start to give little bits of hints about maybe what's going to happen." However, Trinen revealed that Nintendo refers to the project internally as "the sequel to 'The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.'"
Thus far, the follow-up to "Breath of the Wild" has popularly been referred to as "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2." If that turns out to be game's moniker, it would only be the second time the series has used a number in one of its title. The only game to do so was "Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link," the direct sequel to the 1986 original.
Fans have their own ideas about Breath of the Wild 2's real title
In light of Nintendo's reluctance to reveal the name of the game, IGN asked Twitter users to voice their thoughts on what the moniker might turn out to be. Fans came up with more creative theories than simply "Breath of the Wild 2."
One commenter posited that the sequel might be called "The Legend of Zelda: Malice Rising or Calamity Rising," before adding that they wouldn't be surprised if the title referenced the sky. Another hypothesized the follow-up would bear the title "The Winds of Time," a potential nod to both "Wind Waker" and "Ocarina of Time."
Naturally, some used the opportunity to pitch joke titles. For example, @Skinney put forth "Breath of the Wild: Zelda Strikes Back," referencing "Star Wars." Meanwhile, @UselessNobody8 offered up "The Legend of Zelda: there's time travel in this one."
Whatever the actual title may be, Nintendo likely won't share it until closer to the "Breath of the Wild" sequel's 2022 launch. In the meantime, you can breathe easy knowing the game is not too far off.
