Avatar Board Game Destroys Its Kickstarter Goal

Since its inception in 2005, the "Avatar: The Last Airbender" franchise has manifested itself in many formats. From two TV shows, one of which PewDiePie recently admitted he was wrong about, to multiple video games and video game appearances (including those in "Smite" and tentatively "Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl"), to an ill-received live-action film, the series has played a big role in pop culture. Now, the franchise is reinventing itself in the form of a tabletop RPG, and its crowdfunding goal was smashed in just a single day.

Created by Magpie Games, whose previous projects include "Masks: A New Generation," "Root: The RPG," and "Urban Shadows," "Avatar Legends: The RPG" is described on Magpie's official website as "a unique opportunity to return to a beloved setting–this time as the heroes of the story!" The description provides multiple example scenarios players may find themselves in, including having to "protect local merchants from the Triple Threat Triad in Republic City, travel through a spirit portal to rescue a child taken into the Spirit World, negotiate peace between feuding communities within the Earth Kingdom, or pursue mysteries (and villains) that arise throughout their adventure!" Fan excitement for the "Avatar" RPG is only growing, though, and gamers won't believe what Magpie has planned.

More details on "Avatar: The RPG"

The campaign started on Kickstarter on August 3 with a crowdfunding goal of $50,000. Fans passed the funding threshold in just 16 minutes. After reaching the goal, Magpie Games sent out a tweet thanking fans for completing the Kickstarter goal, stating "Avatar Legends: The RPG has been on Kickstarter for an hour...what an hour it's been! ... Thank you to the community for all the support! We're excited to be on this journey with you! Yip yip!"

Since reaching its goal, the project has accrued far more contributions. As of this writing, the RPG has reached about $1.4 million in funding and growing. There are about 12,100 backers, and the campaign still has 29 days to go.

Further, as more funding tiers are met in the Kickstarter campaign, more rewards are unlocked. These include adding Tenzin and Azula as NPCs, as well as the "Avatar" Journal Pack that includes five booklets for players of the RPG. No additional tiers have been announced, but given that the Kickstarter is still going strong, it wouldn't be a surprise if more tiers were introduced.

There is no stated release date for the tabletop RPG. However, if you wish to contribute, the Kickstarter concludes on September 3. In the meantime, "Avatar: The Last Airbender" and "The Legend of Korra" are both available to stream on Netflix in addition to a live-action "Avatar" series in the works for the popular streaming platform.
