Sonic Fans Won't Want To Miss Puyo Puyo Tetris 2's Latest Update
Sega has finally combined two of its most loved game series, allowing fans to indulge in both puzzles and the age-old art of going fast. That's right: Sonic the Hedgehog has made his way to Puyo Puyo Tetris 2.
Sonic isn't a stranger to crossovers or console hopping. He's appeared in collaborations with Nintendo mascot Mario, and Nintendo seems to have an at least somewhat healthy relationship with former competitor Sega. Sonic 2 even received a Nintendo Switch remaster in celebration of Sonic's 30th anniversary. Sonic also appeared in the popular, chaotic multiplayer game Fall Guys as a wearable skin, though the skin was only available temporarily.
Though Sega has had a rough time financially due to COVID-19 and lower-than-average sales, it continues to give back to fans, this time with a treat for players of its latest puzzler, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2. Nintendo revealed that a new, free update to the game includes Sonic as a playable character, along with a new Boss Raid mode and three characters that haven't appeared in America since Puyo Pop Fever: Ms. Accord, Lidelle, and The Ocean Prince. The update also adds fresh background music and avatars from the Sonic franchise, including Knuckles, Shadow, Tails, Dr. Eggman, and more.
Boss Raid adds a multiplayer mode that asks players to team up with their friends and challenge beefy CPU-controlled bosses. Completing special Chance Time challenges mid-match will hurt bosses more effectively and allow players to get an edge over their powerful opponents. Finishing Boss Raids earns players Item Cards for Skill Battle mode.
Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 follows in the footsteps of 2017's well-received Switch version of Puyo Puyo Tetris by allowing players to combine two beloved puzzle franchises, tackling challenges that include round, squishy Puyos and unrelenting Tetriminos. This mixture of two classic puzzle styles adds a new layer of difficulty to the game and reinvents gameplay, forcing players to find new strategies.
Sonic is perhaps the most adored Sega character. He's become a meme in recent years, and fans have enjoyed coming up with theories about every detail of the blue hedgehog. If fans want more Sonic in future Sega games, they should keep voicing their joy at seeing him in Puyo Puyo Tetris 2. After all, it wouldn't be the first time Sega listened to the people.
