League Of Legends Fans Just Got Great News

League of Legends has been one of the leading MOBA titles for over a decade, including being one of the biggest competitive games in the world of esports. The success of League of Legends has spawned a number of spin-offs that take place in the world of Runeterra, including an auto-battler, an upcoming mobile version, and fans can also expect a turn-based RPG, Ruined King just around the corner. Now the franchise can add MMORPG to that list.

According to Riot Games' Greg Street, the company's Vice President of IP and Entertainment, a League of Legends massive multiplayer online role-playing game is now in development. A tweet posted by Street on Dec. 17 reads: "I have news! My recent job at Riot has been to help develop the League universe, which we're going to need! Because it is time. My new job is to kick off a big (some might say massive) game that many of you, and many Rioters, have been asking us to create." If that wasn't enough of a hint, Street replied to a fan's question outright whether the new game was an MMO. "It is an MMO," Street confirmed.

Some speculation going around suggests that this newest project from Riot Games could be the mysterious Project F, which was teased in the studio's 10th anniversary video posted in October of 2019. A brief glimpse of gameplay in the video could be seen labeled "Early Development," but very little was said about the project.

Other fans had their doubts, taking Street's words to mean that the new game would be strictly an MMO, and not an RPG. One Twitter user asked for clarification: "By the technical definition, LoL is actually a MMO (Massive Multiplayer Online), so the true question is: It's an RPG?" Though no reply came from Street or Riot Games, a report from Polygon "confirmed with a Riot Games representative that the company is developing an MMORPG."

While some League of Legends players are simply in it for the fun of online competition, there is a rich lore within the world of Runeterra that could give gamers the opportunity to really explore in MMORPG format. One developer in the 10th anniversary video described their hopes for the future experiences of LoL enthusiasts: "Even though we all love League of Legends, I think we also all love to imagine the possibility of what [it would] be like to run around and explore the world of Runeterra." It looks like players will finally have the chance to do just that.
