Wasteland

Electronic Arts and Interplay Productions' Wasteland was originally released in 1988, though Krome Studios and inXile Entertainment debuted a remastered version in February 2020. The science fiction open world RPG takes place in the year 2087, several generations following a nuclear holocaust that left parts of Earth completely radioactive. Players assume the role of a Desert Ranger, a band of lawmen residing in the Southwestern United States who keep the peace in the area and protect survivors. Rangers explore the remaining parts of the world and investigate disturbances. Wasteland is a hugely influential game, and it eventually led to the first entry in the Fallout series, which started as a sequel to this IP.

Konami's Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater takes place in 1964 in a Soviet jungle setting, 31 years before the events of the first Metal Gear. The game follows a FOX operative codenamed Naked Snake, who must rescue a Russian rocket scientist, sabotage a superweapon, and assassinate his own former boss. Like previous games, Snake Eater uses stealth and infiltration tactics as players direct Naked Snake through enemy-filled environments. The Metal Gear Solid franchise as a whole is considered to be one of the most influential series of its time, as it involves one of the most elaborate storylines in gaming and is known for kicking off the tactical stealth genre. Snake Eater received overwhelmingly positive reviews, with critics lauding its graphics and in-depth storyline.

The Call of Duty: Black Ops – Cold War campaign may be short-lived, but there are plenty of other games dedicated to delivering the same levels of espionage that can fill the void after its completion.
