The Rarest Sega Dreamcast Game Isn't What You'd Expect
Sega's home console business met its unfortunate end during the Dreamcast's lifecycle. But at least it went out with a bang. The Dreamcast's massive software library is jam-packed with titles from a nice mix of genres. Many modern gamers still appreciate the machine's retro releases and have even pledged money to support the creation of another title for Sega's final piece of hardware in 2020. Classics such as Sonic Adventure, Soulcalibur, Crazy Taxi, Jet Grind Radio, and Shenmue (which series developer Yu Suzuki wants to make another sequel for) run the gamut of standout Dreamcast games.
Sega fanatics and gamers in general are still fascinated by what the Dreamcast had to offer during its heyday. Which is why there are plenty of gaming collectors who make it their duty to find the most uncommon games for the system. While there are a bunch of well-known Dreamcast titles that fetch a high price nowadays, there are also a few releases that are less popular yet highly sought out for their rarity.
The rarest Dreamcast game may just surprise you. So, which one is it?
The rarest Dreamcast game is a little known Capcom shooter
It seems the distinction of "rarest Sega Dreamcast game" goes to a little known Capcom shooter called Cannon Spike. For those who've never played it, here's a quick breakdown of what Cannon Spike has to offer: it's an action-packed, multi-directional shooter that lets you command a large variety of original heroes and recognizable Capcom icons. The familiar faces that make up the game's roster include Arthur from Ghosts 'n' Goblins, Baby Bonnie Hood from Darkstalkers, Cammy from Street Fighter 2, Charlie from Street Fighter Alpha, Mega Man, and Shiba Shintaro from Three Wonders.
According to Price Charting, a brand spanking new in box version of Cannon Spike can fetch a high price ranging from $300 to $500. Over on eBay, there's even an asking price for the game at $2,000 (which was actually the lowest price at the time of this writing). Given Cannon Spike is a Dreamcast exclusive and a rare oddity from Capcom's large gaming catalog, it's easy to see why it's considered the rarest Sega Dreamcast release.
