Every PS4 Game Confirmed For PS5 Upgrades
Many gamers are thrilled about the PlayStation 5, and one of the console's selling points is backwards compatibility, a feature lacking in the PS4. More importantly, word has spread that Sony will offer upgrades for select PS4 titles to provide the definitive gaming experience. However, these upgrades will be dictated by the publisher's discretion. While all upcoming PS4 titles must be compatible with the PS5, gamers can only expect a PS5 upgrade for older titles if the company behind it wants to put in time and effort.
No matter what, the PS4 has a sizable library of games that can utilize the PS5 upgrade, but Sony has yet to provide an exhaustive list of games that will take advantage of the offer. So, here's all the games we know of so far that will receive the coveted PS5 upgrade. Expect this list to be updated as more titles are announced.
Cyberpunk 2077
Almost every gamer on the planet is looking forward to Cyberpunk 2077. Even though the game will launch close to the dawn of the next console generation, Sony has gamers covered no matter which version they buy.
Anyone who purchases the PlayStation 4 version of Cyberpunk 2077 can pop the disc into either the PS4 or PS5, and the game will play. While the PS4 version running on the PS5 might not look as good as the PS5 disc in the PlayStation 5, CD Projekt RED promises that everyone who bought a PS4 version will eventually receive a free PS5 upgrade patch that will "[take] full advantage of next-gen hardware." In other words, this patch will make the PS4 version look and run as smoothly as the PS5 version, so long as it is played on a PS5.
Gamers might have to wait an unspecified amount of time for the PS5 upgrade, but at least they can buy whichever version they choose and play the best looking and running one on the PS5.
Madden and FIFA 21
Electronic Arts has released new Madden and FIFA titles annually for almost two decades, and missing the perennial launch is not in the company's operations manual. Even though the PlayStation 5 is almost upon you, EA is still charging full steam ahead with the release of Madden 21 and FIFA 21, and anyone who buys the PS4 versions will also receive a PS5 upgrade, free of charge. Well, almost free of charge.
If you buy a Madden 21 or FIFA 21 PS4 disc and try to save some money with a discless PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, you can't take advantage of the upgrade program. Digital versions of the games won't run into this issue and will unlock PS5 versions for free, so take that into consideration when scoping out your console of choice.
Destiny 2
If you ever wanted to play Destiny 2 with 4K resolution and 60 FPS on a console, then you should be excited for the PlayStation 5 (and Xbox Series X). Any and all Destiny 2 content you own on the PS4 will come with you to the PS5 since the game will receive a free PS5 upgrade. You won't have to buy any expansions again, just download the game onto your new console and pick up from where you left off, all while experiencing Destiny 2 with 10 teraflops of graphical horsepower at your back.
Best of all, Destiny 2 will support "intergenerational crossplay," so it doesn't matter whether you play the game on PS4 or PS5. If you want to team up with friends who may or may not own a PS5, you can still hang out with them, shoot Hive Wizards, and conquer the Crucible regardless of console generation.
