Demon's Souls 2: Will We Ever Get A Sequel?
Demon's Souls helped establish an entirely new gaming genre. FromSoftware, led by visionary director Hidetaka Miyazaki, formulated a dark, unforgiving gameplay style that forever became "Souls-like."
Though titles like Bloodborne and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice have helped bring the genre to new heights, Souls-like fans would like the chance to return to the game that started it all. Will FromSoftware ever release a sequel to Demon's Souls?
Only Sony can green light the next Demon's Souls game
In an interview with Game Informer, Miyazaki revealed it's up to Sony to decide whether the Demon's Souls series continues or receives a remaster. This echoes his statement about a Bloodborne sequel. Even though the decision is out of his hands, Miyazaki admitted he's hesitant to return to the world of Demon's Souls.
"It's not that I'm embarrassed, I just don't like to look at my previous works," Miyazaki commented. Demon's Souls was the first game he directed, and, while it was considered a success, his later titles have benefited from his years of experience. Despite this discomfort, Miyazaki said he understood some fans were clamoring for more Demon's Souls content. Though the concept makes him nervous, he would be open to a remaster or sequel by a trusted studio.
A Demon's Souls remaster may be in the works at Bluepoint Games
Bluepoint Games handled the 2018 Shadow of the Colossus remake. The company is reportedly working on another remaster ... which just might be Demon's Souls.
A January 2020 tweet from the developer seemed to tease a Demon's Souls remake. Sporting the caption "Stay Hungry #ResetEra," the tweet may reference a Demon's Souls discussion that popped up on ResetEra the day prior. The accompanying image appears to hold further clues, including a blue flower or head of cabbage that resembles a Demon's Souls item, and text that could be a jab at the original game's notoriously slow loading times.
Many of the projects Bluepoint Games has worked on have been remasters for Sony-owned properties. Beyond Shadow of the Colossus, the list includes Gravity Rush Remastered and Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection. Bluepoint president Marco Thrush has confirmed the studio has a major title in the works for the PlayStation 5, and many fans believe this is none other than a Demon's Souls remake.
FromSoftware is busy with Elden Ring
Right now, FromSoftware is working on Elden Ring, a mysterious collaboration with Song of Ice and Fire author George R. R. Martin. The dark fantasy title appears to be a massive undertaking. Martin wrote the overarching mythos that served as the game's foundation, leaving the developers to construct a game using Martin's complex setting and narrative.
Though It draws some influences from Dark Souls, Elden Ring encompasses a large world complete with new systems and mechanics. Perhaps once FromSoftware wraps up work on Elden Ring, it will be free to consider dusting off older franchises and formulating sequels. With Sony's blessing, of course.
