Adult Jokes We Can't Believe They Allowed In These Video Games
Adult humor in video games is nothing new. From the old school Leisure Suit Larry games to the absurdity of the Grand Theft Auto franchise, gamers have gotten pretty used to occasional lewd behavior in their interactive entertainment. However, there are times when the jokes seem to come completely out of left field, particularly when they're in a game that seems decidedly more like all-ages fare.
It happens more often than you'd expect, and it's not always subtle. Sometimes they're genuinely funny, while others seem to be ill-advised at best. With that in mind, here's a look at some adult jokes in video games that genuinely surprised fans. These are those moments that make you pause your game and ask yourself if you really just saw or heard what you think you did. Be warned, though: as funny as many of these jokes are, you may want to rinse the developers' mouths out with soap by the end.
Peeping on Roll - Mega Man Legends 2
Roll Caskett is Mega Man's best friend in the Mega Man Legends series. She's always there to lend a hand with new upgrades and emotional support for our hero, so it's kind of concerning when he decides to go full-on peeping Tom on her in Mega Man Legends 2.
After learning Roll is taking a bath, players can make Mega Man book it straight to her room. By opening the door to the bathroom and "accidentally" walking in on Roll, you'll trigger a scene where the screen goes black and Roll can be heard screaming in surprise. She kicks Mega Man out of the room, but he'll do an excited fist-pump in the air (accompanied by a victorious musical sting) right outside the bathroom door.
Despite what the music might imply and the developer's intentions for this to clearly be a gag, it's not exactly your hero's finest hour. If anything, Mega Man comes off like a real jerk here.
Itsy bitsy Poke Ball bikinis - Pokemon
The Pokemon series has an interesting relationship with swimsuits. Considering how many NPCs can be encountered just floating around in the middle of the ocean, it's no surprise some odd dialogue has turned up here and there regarding beach attire. Allegedly, there have been more than a few uncomfortable moments related to characters wearing bikinis.
According to a screenshot that has long circulated on sites like Reddit, one NPC in Pokemon Black and White will spout the meme-worthy phrase, "If I'm wearing a bikini ... where do I put my Pokeballs? Teehee ... woman's secret!" While jaw-dropping, it's worth noting that there doesn't appear to be any video evidence of this exchange. This wouldn't be the first time a screenshot was doctored for comedic purposes.
In Pokemon Sun and Moon, another trainer will express she's been having difficulty getting Poke Balls out of her bikini. It is also probably worth mentioning that she says this with a sly smile on her face. Can the developers please get these ladies a fanny pack or something? Where's that side quest?
Lonely Arrow Girl - Breath of the Wild
As Venture Beat once hilariously pointed out, just about everyone in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild seems to have the hots for your hero, Link. There's Paya, the girl who mentions her hidden birthmark to Link on more than one occasion, as well as Mipha, the Zora Champion and Link's childhood friend who wants to reconnect with him.
However, the most notable example of this attraction toward Link comes from a character who you never get to see in person: Lonely Arrow Girl. You can find her journals in Kakariko Village, in which she describes her fascination with "the new guy in town," Link. In some barely-obscured innuendo, Lonely Arrow Girl writes, "I hope he comes by and nocks an arrow for me. It's been WAAAY too long."
Somehow, it doesn't seem like she's all that interested in his marksmanship.
The virile Terrydactyland - Banjo-Tooie
Banjo-Kazooie and its sequel Banjo-Tooie are undisputed masterpieces of platforming gameplay, though, the games have more than their fair share of odd moments. For example, developer Gregg Mayles has expressed the character of Brentilda and one of the missions related to her are "certainly one of the worst pieces of design" from his career. However, there's a certain piece of scenery in Banjo-Tooie that easily overshadows any problems with Brentilda.
It's harder to see from the ground, but by floating over the area called Terrydactyland, you can clearly see a rock formation that resembles, um, a specific part of the male anatomy. Not only that, there is a series of smaller platforms that seem to be leading out of the tip of the formation. There's no way it wasn't intentional. What's even more incredible is that it remained intact in the Xbox Live Arcade re-release of Banjo-Tooie.
Jak is a single player - Jak 3
In the Jak & Daxter games, Daxter can always be counted upon to not take anything seriously. Still, there are a few times when Jak's furry best friend leaves the limits of good taste far behind. One of Daxter's more notable inappropriate comments appears in Jak 3.
In Jak 3, the duo come across an NPC who stands guard at a massive gun turret. After listening to the guy brag about his sharpshooting skills, the NPC challenges Jak, asking, "Wanna try to beat me score?"
To this, Daxter cuts off Jak and replies, "Oh, don't worry. Jak beats things all the time, eh Jak?" Daxter then giggles at this little joke, which likely went way over the heads of many of the kids playing the game. Sure, Jak 3 was rated "T for Teen," but the joke is still pretty racy for a game like this.
A wild bananer - Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal
After a hard day's work in Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal, Ratchet and Clank kick back to watch a bit of TV. They tune into a show about a mysterious creature that has been sighted nearby. During the broadcast, one of the more enthusiastic locals mentions having seen a wild figure running through the woods.
The mysterious individual is described as being "buck naked, screaming, and holding a bananer." Then the local pauses and considers the fact that maybe it wasn't a banana after all. The camera cuts away from him as he begins to tell the viewer what the banana-looking object really might have been.
The Ratchet & Clank series tends to aim for some pretty obvious puns that skirt the line of decency (heck, the game is called Up Your Arsenal). Still, this one is pretty close to being an explicit anatomical reference, which is why it still feels surprising in an already silly game.
More bananas - The Secret of Monkey Island
The point and click adventure games from LucasArts were always full of irreverent humor, occasionally getting pretty dark. This is the company that let you microwave a hamster in Maniac Mansion, after all. Still, the majority of the jokes in The Secret of Monkey Island are much sillier. At times, the game feels like what would happen if Monty Python had made a swashbuckling adventure serial.
There's one dirty joke in the game that was likely lost on many of the younger people who played it. At one point in the story, protagonist Guybrush Threepwood has to gather bananas to bribe a monkey into helping him. After taking several, the tribe of cannibals that call the island their home become angry with Guybrush for stealing all their fruit. They'll confront him and ask, "Is that a banana in your pocket, or are you just glad to see us?"
Again, cheeky jokes are pretty much par for the course for a LucasArts game. However, this one is especially memorable for just how suggestive it is.
Snake is not a solid dude - Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Solid Snake may be an American hero, but even he isn't above creeping players out every now and then. There's that time he got a little too up close and personal with a sexy poster in Metal Gear Solid 2 (earning players the embarrassing achievement "Snake Beater"), but perhaps his lewdest moment arrived in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
Snake has unique dialogue exchanges that can occur when facing different characters in the game, but his most problematic lines unfold when he's faced with Zero Suit Samus. First, he tells his contact, Mei Ling, that "Samus took her clothes off." After Mei Ling explains this is simply Samus' Zero Suit, Snake expresses his desire to take off his gear so he can more easily "catch her."
Mei Ling discourages this action, saying Samus would easily evade him. Snake's response? "Her loss." C'mon, Snake. If you have to chase a girl down in your skivvies, maybe you should just stick to your spy work. Romance doesn't seem like it's your thing.
Moulin Cortex - Crash Twinsanity
During a brief cutscene in Crash Twinsanity, Crash Bandicoot and his nemesis, Dr. Cortex, accidentally fly straight into a burlesque club called the Moulin Cortex. Though you don't get to see the ensuing insanity inside, you do hear the screams of the women who work there, who presumably didn't expect a giant battle to interrupt their shifts.
In an amusing moment of self-awareness, Cortex can be heard apologizing to the ladies in the club. In addition to this, you can also hear him asking the highly inappropriate question, "Are those real?" as well as the loaded, "Mother?"
This seems to imply Cortex is running a burlesque club with his own name and mug plastered on the marquee, yet somehow his own mother was hired as a performer without his knowledge. It's a funny (if concerning) gag, but it definitely feels unexpected in the middle of a Crash Bandicoot game.
Marina's (k)inky idea - Splatoon 2
In Splatoon 2, Marina and Pearl are the hosts of Inkopolis News, offering commentary and information on upcoming matches in the game. They get into more than a few suggestive conversations over the course of the title, but most of them are relatively tame. However, there's one little back and forth between the two hosts that just about crosses the line into being straight-up dirty.
While discussing whether they'd rather have the powers of flight or invisibility, Marina explains why she'd prefer to to turn invisible. Marina suggests an invisible player could "spy on people while they're ... inking their Splat Zones." Even Marina looks uncomfortable while she says this, and she's typically the more relaxed of the two hosts.
Beyond the implied voyeurism on Marina's part, the phrasing is just plain upsetting. This proves that whimsical innuendo can sometimes sound way more disturbing than outright dirty dialogue.
