Marvel's Spider-Man 2 - What We Know So Far
If your Spidey senses are tingling, it might be because the next game in the highly successful "Marvel's Spider-Man" franchise has been officially announced. Revealed during Sept. 9, 2021's PlayStation Showcase, "Marvel's Spider-Man 2" will have big shoes to fill given the massive critical successes of both "Marvel's Spider-Man" and "Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales."
According to the PlayStation Blog, "Marvel's Spider-Man 2" will have a lot of the same masterminds behind it as its predecessor did. Creative director Bryan Intihar and game director Ryan Smith will both be working hard on bringing Spidey's latest adventure to life. If you liked "Marvel's Spider-Man," "Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales," or both, you're more than likely in for a treat, especially since the recently announced sequel will feature both Spider-Men taking the fight to a brand new crew of baddies.
Here's everything that has been revealed about "Marvel's Spider-Man 2" so far, including its release date, trailer, and gameplay.
When is the release date for Marvel's Spider-Man 2?
As revealed in the trailer, "Marvel's Spider-Man 2" is scheduled for a 2023 release. Fans have a long time to wait, and with a year-plus window as the only indicator for when folks can finally play the game, there's still a lot up in the air. Of course, with the wait being so long, that hopefully means that fans won't have to run into the kinds of delays that have plagued games all through 2020 and 2021.
According to a PlayStation Blog update shared about the game, "Marvel's Spider-Man 2" will be released as a PS5 exclusive. This stands in contrast to the previous two entries in the series, and the announcement has already caused a bit of a stir among frustrated fans. The console has been hard for fans to get their hands on due to intense problems with scalpers and other supply shortages, but the good news is there's plenty of time before the 2023 release to hunt down a PS5 of your very own. But before you make that decision, of course, you'll probably want to check out the trailer.
Is there a trailer for Marvel's Spider-Man 2?
The trailer for "Marvel's Spider-Man 2" premiered during the last five minutes of the PlayStation Showcase. Though it only runs a little over 90 seconds, it packs plenty of punches.
The trailer opens on a stormy night on a city street, as an ominous voice proclaims, "For as long as I can remember, I have looked for an equal." The words are punctuated by a body hitting an electrocuted traffic light, immediately after which a close-up of Peter Parker's Spider-Man suit is revealed. The voice continues, saying, "One who could push me," as a fight is briefly showcased. Next, it says, "One who could surprise me," followed by a close-up of Miles Morales' Spider-Man suit and a similarly brief fight.
Next, both heroes are shown next to each other, as the mysterious voice continues: "One who could even beat me." A tag-team fight follows with both Peter and Miles. The screen cuts to black as the voice carries on: "But all I've found is disappointment." Post-fight, both heroes peer down an alley as the voice asks, "Will one of you finally give me what I desire?" The screen cuts to black again as a different voice, deep and a bit distorted, says, "Yes, we will."
Suddenly, Venom's face appears in the dark, confirming the villain's appearance in the sequel. The iconic "Spider-Man" logo seals the deal on the epic trailer, complete with intense music and a smash cut to the 2023 release window.
What will the gameplay be like in Marvel's Spider-Man 2?
Though the trailer clearly focused on plot, the PlayStation Blog revealed a few additional gameplay details. Along with the details shared on the blog, it seems safe to assume that fans can expect the same benefits "Marvel's Spider-Man" featured: a huge open-world landscape, dynamic combat, and plenty of opportunities to smoothly swing among the skyscrapers. Since "Marvel's Spider-Man 2" will be a PS5 exclusive, players will also benefit from the console's capabilities, as was the case with "Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered" and "Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales."
On the PlayStation Blog, Insomniac's Ryan Schneider stated that the developer is "thrilled to continue the journey of both Peter Parker and Miles Morales in their most epic single-player adventure yet." If the action in the trailer is any indication, Peter will have new cybernetic spider legs at his disposal, while Miles' venom sting ability may be boosted to a whole new level. Also, players may be able to expect the ability to swap between heroes — it looks like the sky is the limit. After all, Venom voice actor Tony Todd (of "Candyman" fame) has promised that the new sequel will be "massive."
There's a lot to be excited about with "Marvel's Spider-Man 2." And if you're interested in this game, you'll likely want the details on the upcoming "Marvel's Wolverine," also from Insomniac Games.
