Could Mario + Rabbids Be Getting A Sequel?
Whether you love the Rabbids or hate them, you have to admit: they appeared in at least one good game. That game was Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, a turn-based strategy game in the vein of X-COM. Ubisoft's first stab at bringing the Mario universe and the Rabbids together was pure gold. Now we're wondering if a sequel might be on the way.
A curious new job listing on the Ubisoft website is looking for a 3D animator to work on "prestigious triple-A title." Said animator will concentrate on "high quality keyframe animations for bipeds and quadrupeds" — another promising sign. Oh, and did we mention that this job will be located at Ubisoft Milan, the studio behind Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle? The plot thickens.
Mario + Rabbids was a surprising success, bringing new players into the world of turn-based strategy titles while also giving longtime players a goofy new spin on the genre. We can easily see there being a sequel at some point; in fact, the game's creative director, Davide Soliani, expressed interest in working on one a few years back.
"I would love to, and I would be honored to :)" Soliani said during a Reddit AMA.
Of course, there is a very real possibility this game is not Mario + Rabbids 2. Ubisoft Milan also had a hand in developing Assassin's Creed Rogue, Ghost Recon: Wildlands, and Ghost Recon: Breakpoint. So it's entirely possible the title referenced in the job listing is just some other game with "bipeds and quadrupeds" – people and animals.
Still, we're going to hold out hope. Mario + Rabbids always felt like one of those games no one thought would work until it did. If it does indeed get a follow-up, we think Nintendo Switch owners will be far more appreciative of what it could bring to the table.
