Why Valkyrae's A Minecraft Movie Scene Was Left On The Cutting Room Floor

Gamer and streamer Valkyrae apparently crafted a big plate of beef with Jason Momoa after filming a cameo for "A Minecraft Movie." In 2024, Valkyrae spent 10 days out in New Zealand to get in front of the camera for a short cameo for the big-screen Minecraft adaptation, and in the process got to see some of the stars at work — specifically, Momoa, who plays Garrett "The Garbage Man" Garrison. But now that "A Minecraft Movie" has hit theaters, eagle-eyed fans were quick to notice that Valkyrae was nowhere to be found.

Here's a little background: During a Q&A style video after filming her cameo, Valkyrae shared an unflattering story about Momoa, claiming that he started shouting and berating the crew after one of his scenes. She told YouTuber JasonTheWeen, "I just saw him like, mistreat some of the crew, and it was pretty disappointing ... he was just angry, like really mad and like yelling, and so I was like, 'Man, this is like, not a good work environment.'"

She explained that it all supposedly happened because the crew hadn't set up a scene to Momoa's liking. And she did backtrack a little bit while telling it, adding that it happened after an emotional scene and he might have still been in character a little bit. But once the story was out, the damage was done. At the end of her story, she said of Momoa, "I would probably have to say that was probably like the worst celebrity thing I've seen." So was putting Momoa on the spot the reason her scene was cut from the film? Well, she recently set the record straight ... sort of.

Valkyrae opened up about A Minecraft Movie

With "A Minecraft Movie" now in theaters, Valkyrae talked about the whole situation a little more during an April 6 livestream, giving her fans just a little more juice about what happened. Disappointingly enough, it really was just a little more. She mentioned that she had a great time in New Zealand along with several other streamers who did make it into the final movie, but she confirmed once and for all that what she'd filmed had indeed been cut — before hinting that if it hadn't, she might have faced a lawsuit. She told her fans that she likely would have had about 30 seconds of screentime, then added, "I would much rather not have that 30 seconds than be sued."

Well now, that's interesting. She didn't elaborate on that specific point, but fans had some pretty solid speculation about what it all meant. It's very likely that she signed a non-disclosure agreement before filming anything for "A Minecraft Movie," and it's possible there was a non-disparagement clause in the contract. Throwing Jason Momoa under the bus for allegedly going off on the crew would have violated that agreement.

As for why a lawsuit didn't actually come out of it, one Redditor speculated that it was simply easier for the studio to drop her from the film than it would have been to bring a case to court — with all the negative press that might have entailed. So, is the drama between Valkyrae and the folks behind "A Minecraft Movie" finally over? It doesn't seem like that's the case.

Did Valkyrae make the Minecraft situation worse?

After Valkyrae's livestream, her comments about "A Minecraft Movie" again circulated through the media, which may have led to some unintended backlash. Not much later, she tweeted a few vague comments on X that have her fans thinking she might have put herself in even more hot water.

First, without any context, she posted what read like a simple, drawn-out scream. Just a few hours after that, she wrote in part, "I make mistakes, sometimes I accidentally repeat mistakes which is frustrating but i do and will always try to be a good human." Given the timing and the specific mention of "repeat mistakes," fans quickly connected the cryptic tweets to the ongoing drama over the "Minecraft" movie.

Many of her followers rallied behind her decision to talk about her involvement — or lack thereof — in the movie, while others pointed out that the whole thing was overblown from the beginning, and her latest comments are just adding unnecessary fuel to the fire. As of this writing, Valkyrae hasn't confirmed or denied that there's any ongoing drama, although it's very possible that this story is still unfolding.
