Was Overwatch 2's Release Window Just Spoiled?
PlayStation Brazil might've spilled the beans on the mysterious Overwatch 2 release date — or at least the release window. Previously, director Jeff Kaplan said that he and Blizzard as a whole had "no idea" when the game would release. According to a now-deleted tweet, however, Overwatch 2 might just be launching in 2020.
The translated tweet caught by Voxel read, "2020 will be the year Overwatch 2 comes to PS4, and to get ready, we talked to some of its developers, who gave us hot information." This "hot information" originally linked to an old interview with Aaron Keller, assistant director of Overwatch 2, and Michael Chu, its chief writer after the sequel was announced in November. Does this mean that the "2020" was a mistake on the social media manager's part? Maybe.
It's fairly telling that the link was to an old interview that didn't tell us anything new — and conspicuously excluded this apparent 2020 release. There is also the fact that everything we know about Overwatch 2 seems to indicate that the game is still in early development. When asked about a release date back in November, Kaplan said, "I don't know. I have no idea. Like, just let us make it great, that's what we care about more than anything. We don't have a date in mind."
Thus we're taking this tweet with a hefty grain of salt. Considering what we know, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense that Overwatch 2 will suddenly be available before the end of this year. Even so, this tweet has the internet in something of a tizzy, with eager Overwatch fans hoping hard that 2020 will indeed be the year of Overwatch 2.
Blizzard is working on many projects, few of which have solid release dates. We don't know when Diablo 4 will release either, and fans have been waiting for that game much, much longer than Overwatch 2 hopefuls. For now we're going to have to stay skeptical of these release rumors.
