Fans' Biggest Unanswered Questions About Nintendo Switch 2

At long last we have confirmation: The Nintendo Switch 2 is coming soon. Nintendo dropped a trailer showing off the design of the new console and Joy-Cons, but the showcase was pretty light on specific details. Aside from the general design of the new system, we got a peek at a new "Mario Kart" game and another reassurance that Switch 2 will be backwards compatible with the original system — kind of. The Nintendo Switch 2 is launching sometime in 2025, but fans are still desperate to get more concrete information about the console and to pin down the official release date.

Unfortunately, Nintendo isn't planning to reveal any more information until a Nintendo Direct presentation on April 2, and fans are feeling their patience being tested. Even some Nintendo diehards think that's a big mistake on Nintendo's part, largely due to the recent Switch 2 info leaks. As one fan quipped on X, "April? With all these leaks?! Yikes. There will be nothing to announce by then." This is far from Nintendo's first rodeo, however, and some of the company's fans have full confidence in the plan.

Regardless of how you may feel about Nintendo's big announcement, we all want to know more about the Switch 2. Now that real confirmation is just around the corner, the wait feels even more painful. The reveal trailer gave us plenty of tantalizing hints, but the truth is that right now fans have way more questions than answers.

How powerful is the Nintendo Switch 2?

We now know what the Switch 2 looks like, but we have zero confirmation about what's under the hood. The trailer makes it clear that the new console is bigger than its predecessor, and fans are hoping that it also takes advantage of the improvements Nintendo has already made to the original Switch.

Whether or not the Switch 2 features an OLED screen, fans really want to know how big the new display is going to be. They also have questions about the Switch's display when it's docked. Will the new console come with 4K resolution? That's a feature plenty of gamers want, especially since the console's competitors offer that.

Fans have worried the Switch 2 won't be that powerful, but now some are getting excited the new console might outperform their expectations. Some fans are already sharing graphs comparing the Switch 2's power to every other Nintendo console in units of Game Cubes. However, it's worth noting that any comparisons are based purely on leaked data (for now).

What's the deal with the Joy-Cons?

Fans also have big questions about the other key pieces of hardware that come with the Switch 2: the Joy-Cons. The trailer introduced the new Joy-Cons by showing them sliding around on a flat surface, and some fans are taking that as confirmation of the rumors that the new Joy-Cons will feature mouse functionality. Others are thinking less about new features and more about age-old problems with the Switch's controllers.

Longtime Nintendo fans have their fingers crossed that the company has found a solution for stick drift. Of course, this new design could come with problems of its own, and some fans are already predicting what those could be. "Based on how the joy-cons snap onto the switch 2 in the trailer I wonder how long it will be before we hear reports of the connectors breaking off due to the stress put on them," wrote one YouTube commenter. Once people get their hands on the new Joy-Cons at the Switch 2 live experience events that Nintendo is hosting in New York, Los Angeles, and Dallas, we'll have a better idea of how thoroughly Nintendo has addressed past and potential Joy-Con glitches.

What will the launch catalog be?

The real selling point of any console is the game catalog, so naturally that's the focus of many curious Nintendo fans. The trailer showed off what looks to be a new "Mario Kart" game, and fans are already speculating about how it might play with the Switch 2's improved hardware.

Nintendo hasn't said anything about what to expect in terms of launch titles, which leaves plenty of room for fans to speculate and hope. Some people really want to see Nintendo revisit a franchise that we haven't seen in a while, like "Star Fox". Meanwhile, according to YouTuber NateTheHate — who correctly predicted the date of the Switch 2 reveal trailer — gamers can expect to see ports of multiple "Assassin's Creed" and "Final Fantasy" games, as well as the upcoming "Metal Gear Solid Delta."

The only thing we do know for sure about the Switch 2's launch catalog is that it will include some original Switch games. The new console will be backwards compatible, but Nintendo noted in the reveal trailer that some old games won't work on the new system. Those mystery caveats have fans worried that some of the best Switch games won't be bolstering the Switch 2's catalog at launch.

How much will the Nintendo Switch 2 cost?

We'll finally have many of our Switch 2 questions answered when Nintendo hosts its next Direct on April 2. Fans will know the hardware specifics, and they'll have a good idea of what games they'll be able to play on launch day. However, there's one other huge question that fans want answered before they decide whether or not to buy the Switch 2: the price.

Like seemingly everything else about the Switch 2, the console's price may have already leaked online. The console will reportedly ring up for $399, and that low-ish price point has some fans thinking a second version of the Switch 2 may be coming soon. "Hopefully that means we can get a more powerful version with OLED at launch, I'm definitely willing to pay a bit more for the best hardware they have," wrote one commenter on Reddit. For now, it's best to take the leaked price with a grain of salt and not use it to fuel any other speculation. However, considering how many other Switch 2 leaks have turned out to be true, don't be surprised to see people running with $400 as though it's already been confirmed.
