New Sonic The Hedgehog Movie Trailer Shows Off Sonic's Makeover
After months of waiting — and a promising leak or two — we finally got our first clear look at the new Sonic design for the Sonic the Hedgehog movie. And what's the verdict? It's fine in the most fine way possible. Sonic looks like Sonic, and not like a human in a blue Sonic suit. Really, that's all we ever wanted.
Sonic's proportions are different. He's less jacked. His white gloves have made a return, as have his trademark sneakers. His eyes are closer together, which is more in line with video game Sonic's design (the eyes on that other Sonic looked weird). And believe it or not, he does still have a set of chompers. But these don't offend in quite the same way the old ones did. These look like the kind of teeth a walking, talking cartoon hedgehog might have, and not the kind a hedgehog might have if it accidentally swallowed human dentures.
The folks at Paramount appear to have addressed every concern and delivered a Sonic that fans won't find appalling. That should help the film tremendously.
But Sonic isn't the only star of the film. The new trailer also gave us a look at some scenes we haven't laid eyes on before, and we have to say: Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik is starting to grow on us. Is this iteration of Robotnik going to lean heavily into the Jim Carrey shtick of being extra, well, extra? Absolutely. But if you think back to the old Sonic the Hedgehog cartoons, what was Dr. Robotnik aside from a bumbling idiot? The Carrey Robotnik at least appears to have some intelligence, and that should make the movie far more interesting to watch.
Sonic the Hedgehog is still slated for a Feb. 14, 2020 release. Now we can safely say: we're looking forward to it.
