Terrifier Is Getting Its Own Video Game & Fans Are Divided

It's a good day for fans of extreme horror flicks and a very bad day for gamers with coulrophobia: We've just learned that Art the Clown from the "Terrifier" franchise is getting his very own video game. "Terrifier: The ARTcade Game" is being developed by Relevo and published by Selecta Play. The devs have not announced a firm release date yet, but the game is scheduled to land on Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S sometime in 2025. The "Terrifier" franchise has been steadily growing in popularity since the first movie dropped in 2016, but this retro-inspired beat-em-up is Art's first solo foray into gaming (following his seasonal appearance as a "Call of Duty" skin).

Gamers and "Terrifier" fans alike are a little confused by this announcement, though. The news nicely coincides with this week's release of "Terrifier 3," but "The ARTcade Game" still feels like it's coming out of nowhere. The minute-long trailer doesn't give us much to go on, but while some fans are pretty excited by what they're seeing, others would prefer to see Art star in a legitimately great horror game.

Some people aren't sure how to feel about the Terrifier game

Gamers are posting some hot takes in response to the "Terrifier" game trailer, with some of them are making it clear that this isn't how they'd pictured it. "Put him in 'Dead By Daylight' already," wrote one commenter. "Dead by Daylight" has had good and bad takes on established characters, but it's hard to argue against Art being a perfect addition to that game. Other fans are pointing out that "The ARTcade Game" looks an awful lot like another movie adaptation gamers fell in love with a long time ago.

One you notice the similarities between the style of the "Terrifier" game and "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" (itself inspired by arcade classic "River City Ransom"), you can't unsee them. That might not be a bad thing, though. "Scott Pilgrim" is fondly remembered, and even though the "Terrifier" franchise makes less sense as a beat-em-up, we wouldn't mind it taking a few cues from another beloved game.

We might not understand the motivation behind this particular adaptation just yet, but diehard "Terrifier " fans are largely excited to see their favorite murderous clown show up in any kind of video game. We'll just have to wait and see how the game turns out. If it's anything like the movies that inspired it, "The ARTcade Game" could have some surprisingly strong staying power.
