Respawn-Developed Medal Of Honor: Above And Beyond Hits Oculus Rift In 2020

Raise your hand if you were ready to hear about a Medal of Honor game today. No one? The EA-owned franchise has been dormant for quite some time, but today we learned that a) it's coming back; b) it's coming to Oculus Rift in VR; and c) Respawn Entertainment is at the helm.

The game is called Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond. And believe it or not, some at Respawn are actually being reunited with the Medal of Honor franchise.

Wild history lesson: you can trace the formation of Respawn Entertainment all the way back to the era of Medal of Honor games. Back then, a studio called 2015 Games developed a title called Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. And afterward, many members of that studio departed to form a new studio called Infinity Ward. You can probably see where this is going now. Infinity Ward was co-founded by Vince Zampella. Infinity Ward famously made Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare along with a few other titles. And then Zampella and many others left Infinity Ward to form Respawn.

Seeing the folks at Respawn take back the Medal of Honor series felt like a pipe dream, as DICE is a studio that exists and Battlefield is very much the kind of game a modern-day Medal of Honor would be. But it seems no one ever considered VR. We've known for a while that Respawn was making a VR game. Perhaps we just assumed it would be something from the Titanfall universe. How on earth did we forget Medal of Honor?

In any event, we're vamping here. There aren't many details floating around about the game aside from the Oculus Connect trailer (which we've embedded above). We'll be sure to update you with more details about Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond as soon as we get them. For now, all we know is that it's exclusive to the Oculus Rift VR platform, and that it's coming sometime in 2020. Stay tuned.
