A Minecraft Movie Theory: Did Valkyrae Spoil The Ending?

Fans are anxiously looking forward to "A Minecraft Movie" releasing in April 2025, but they might have just gotten a major plot spoiler. In a recent chat with fellow YouTuber JasonTheWeen, Valkyrae talked about her experience filming a cameo for the "Minecraft" adaptation, and some fans think she may dropped a big hint about the movie's story. In particular, Valkyrae may have been discussing Jason Momoa's on-set behavior when she let the supposed hint slip. The YouTuber apparently saw Momoa yelling at some of the crew members in between takes, and even though she was shocked by the way Momoa treated them, she tried to give the situation a generous read. "It was after a very intense scene," Valkyrae said. "It was a very emotional scene, so maybe he was still in character."

The story doesn't put Momoa in the best light, but since Valkyrae said he might have still been in character, some people are jumping to the assumption that Momoa is playing a villain in the movie. There still hasn't been much official word on the plot of "A Minecraft Movie," but thanks to Valkyrae's comments, diehard "Minecraft" fans have a theory on who Momoa could be playing. If they're right, the movie might secretly be an adaptation of a viral "Minecraft" urban legend.

Is Jason Momoa playing Herobrine?

The biggest villain in "Minecraft" history isn't actually in the game at all. Herobrine is a character who looks almost exactly like the game's default protagonist, Steve. The only notable difference in most depictions is that Herobrine has empty, white eyes. Instead of building majestic structures, he wanders the world like a soulless husk, stalking other players in the game.

Are you scared yet? Herobrine started out as a character in creepypasta memes, made up by players to spook each other. In the stories, he'd most often just be found floating in the background, and the players who saw him would be forced to know they were being watched by a creature they couldn't understand. Thanks to the internet, those campfire tales spread far enough that basically everyone who plays "Minecraft" has heard of him. The Herobrine origin story eventually started to evolve, and players came to believe that he was the ghost of "Minecraft" creator Notch's dead brother. So many people started reaching out to Notch to ask about Herobrine that he set up an automated email response to explain that the character isn't real and neither is his late brother. Even with the truth out there, Herobrine has remained a popular figure in the world of "Minecraft." The movie would likely need to invent a new backstory for the character, but the very possibility that he could show up is genuinely exciting for some fans.

Minecraft fans are crossing their fingers for Herobrine

After seeing the reactions to the first trailer, we're worried for the "Minecraft" movie, and we aren't the only ones. Fans who were disappointed by the trailer have been crafting their own plot theories on Reddit, imagining a version of "A Minecraft Movie" that stays faithful to what they love about the game. On that front, this new theory could be a truly positive sign, and fans are thrilled to finally have a reason to feel a little excited.

In fact, fans were already joking about Momoa playing the creepypasta mainstay Herobrine when he was first announced, and this latest on-set story only added fuel to the fire.

People are already dreaming up ways for Herobrine to play a role in the movie. The theory surrounding Valkyrae's anecdote is admittedly thin, but for now it's enough for some fans to get hyped. If it turns out that Jason Momoa really is playing Herobrine, that would at least mean the people making the movie are tuned into the "Minecraft" fan base and culture surrounding the games. At the same time, if the filmmakers have managed to keep Herobrine under wraps all this time, they probably won't be revealing the character anytime soon. Either way, it's clear that Momoa's alleged outburst on the set isn't sitting right with fans, who are hoping for some kind of method actor/lore explanation for the behavior. There's a good chance no one will get an accurate read on "A Minecraft Movie" until it finally debuts.
