A Minecraft Movie: Valkyrae Reveals Jason Momoa's On-Set Behavior

People have long since realized that it's time to stop dismissing video game movies outright, but things are still looking pretty rough for "A Minecraft Movie" ahead of its release. The film was stuck in development hell for years, and when everything finally came together and fans got to take a look at the very first trailer, they weren't impressed. After the harsh reactions to the trailer, we started getting worried about the "Minecraft" movie, and a new story about a tense on-set situation isn't making us feel any better.

The story comes from longtime streamer Valkyrae, who apparently has a cameo in the film. She went on JasonTheWeen's channel for a Q&A and said that she saw some concerning behavior from Jason Momoa on the set of "A Minecraft Movie." Valkyrae said, "I just saw him mistreat some of the crew, and it was pretty disappointing." Even though she didn't like what she saw, Valkyrae was willing to give Momoa the benefit of the doubt. "It was after a very intense scene. It was a very emotional scene so maybe he was still in character, I don't know, but I was kind of surprised by how he treated some of the crew," she said.

According to Valkyrae, Momoa was upset about crew members struggling to set up a particular shot. It's definitely not a flattering story, and unfortunately it's not the first time that we've heard rumors about Momoa's on-set behavior.

Aquaman 2 might have had a tense set, too

In October 2023, people started sharing rumors about Momoa's behavior while filming "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom." According to a report from Variety, the rumors were kicked off by notes from Amber Heard's therapist that were made public during the Johnny Depp defamation trial. The notes read, "Jason said he wanted me fired. Jason drunk — late on set. Dressing like Johnny. Has all the rings too."

Variety confirmed that the notes were from a session where Heard was sharing her experience working on the "Aquaman" sequel. Momoa himself didn't give a comment on the notes, but a representative for DC told Variety, "Jason Momoa conducted himself in a professional manner at all times on the set of 'Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.'" The internet had largely forgotten about that bit of drama, but Valkyrae's recent comments about "A Minecraft Movie" have people looking back on that story in a slightly different light.

People aren't sure what to think

Valkyrae said that her big takeaway from her brief stint on the "Minecraft" movie set was, "Man, this is not a good work environment. I would not be happy working under these conditions." Online people are having a range of reactions to Valkyrae's story. Some are rightly pointing out that since she only had a cameo on the movie, she might have just caught Momoa at a bad moment. Others say they fully believe her story and point to the "Aquaman 2" rumors as further proof that Momoa isn't a good costar. And then there are plenty of people who are just shocked to see Valkyrae diving headfirst into sharing Hollywood drama.

Ultimately, this story probably doesn't have much to do with whether or not the "Minecraft" movie will be any good, though it definitely isn't helping to get people more excited for the film's release. Right now, everyone's imagining that "A Minecraft Movie" will be just another step in the tragic history of video game movies, but fans of the franchise are hoping the movie will be able to overcome its first impression.
