Next Dark Pictures Anthology Game Revealed In Hidden Teaser Trailer
Though The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan has not officially launched, players have already unlocked a secret ending that includes a teaser trailer for the next entry in Supermassive Games' horror franchise.
Little Hope, which serves as both the name of the game and its backwater setting, seems to follow a group of kids as they encounter a nightmarish foe while staying at a cabin in the woods. The teaser introduces three of the game's characters: Andrew, Angela, and Mary, a little girl with a British accent and a penchant for making creepy dolls. Less than a minute long, the video does not provide context on who these people are or what brought them to Little Hope.
This new addition to The Dark Pictures family looks like it will draw inspiration from urban legends and the type of ghost stories you'd tell around a campfire. The woods, symbols, and design elements evoke a similar feeling to The Blair Witch Project and the first and third seasons of HBO's True Detective. The trailer relies on standard horror tropes, hinting at a classic tale in which a monster terrorizes would-be vacationers visiting a small town.
With it's co-op options and branching narrative, Man of Medan has earned decent early remarks, though pacing issues, technical problems, and its standard fare horror plot have dampened its potential. "While the characters and their relationships feel detailed and fleshed out, Man of Medan's overall story never quite manages to make it beyond its ghost-ship premise," wrote Polygon's Austen Goslin. "This is a worthy way to spend a weekend, especially if you're playing with friends, but just make peace with the fact that you may find it harder than expected to keep anyone alive."
The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan releases tomorrow, August 30, 2019, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows.
