What Is Mario And Luigi's Last Name?

Here's something you might not have given much thought to. Mario has his first name plastered all over numerous video games. Luigi stars in a few himself. The duo team up from time to time in a series of RPGs. But all you ever see are the first names. What is Mario and Luigi's last name?

Believe it or not, there is an answer to this question. It comes by way of Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto, and it might leave you scratching your head.

Back in 2012, video game website Game Informer conducted an interview with Miyamoto, and it produced some interesting news about both Mario and Luigi. One of the most important revelations, though, had to do with the last name shared by the brothers. According to Miyamoto, the old Super Mario Bros. film actually gave the two the last name of "Mario." It makes sense, right? They're the "Mario Bros.," so why not stick to that and have them be called Mario Mario and Luigi Mario?

As hilarious as those names are, though, it seems they're not the final answer; at least in Miyamoto's mind.

"I heard [the names] and laughed rather loudly," Miyamoto said. "Of course, this was ultimately included in the film. Based on the film, that's [how] their names ended up. But, just like Mickey Mouse doesn't really have a last name, Mario is really just Mario and Luigi is really just Luigi."

Years after that interview, Miyamoto's word has been law as far as Mario and Luigi having any kind of last name. No other attempts have been made to give the duo a surname, and frankly, even trying would've been rather unnecessary. Nintendo's Mario is perhaps the most famous Mario in the world, and the same can be said for Luigi. If you can still be famous using only your first name — like Madonna or Drake — there's really no reason to complicate the issue.
