Supermassive's Man Of Medan Has Multiplayer, 8 Games Planned For Series

Supermassive Games has announced two multiplayer options for their upcoming interactive horror game, Man of Medan.

In Shared Story mode, you can team up with another player via two person online cooperative play. You'll experience the game simultaneously, exploring the ship at the heart of Man of Medan while making choices that impact the story and the characters you control. The mode also lets you play scenes from varying perspectives, uncovering different information and locations.

With the couch co-op Movie Night mode, you can play Man of Medan with up to four of your friends. Players enter their names and choose which characters they want to play; the game then tells you when to pass the controller. It will also provide updates on how well each player is performing. According to series director and executive producer Pete Samuels, the team drew inspiration from the creative ways people played Until Dawn together when designing both multiplayer options.

Man of Medan is the first entry in Supermassive's planned eight-part anthology, The Dark Pictures. "We want to surprise people each time – when we announce the second [game], we want it to be the last thing people expected, in terms of theme and subgenre and whatever," Samuels told IGN. "And then again with the third one. We have them mapped out for the first eight."

Each game in the series will have separate actors, screenwriters, and development teams. This will allow Supermassive to work on multiple entries at the same time. Despite these differences, the titles will all use similar mechanics, maintaining the focus on narrative and choice-based gameplay. With future installments already in the works, the studio hopes to release two Dark Pictures games every year.

The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan comes to Windows, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 on August 30, 2019.
