Modern Warfare Brings Game-Changing Feature To Call Of Duty Franchise

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare includes the ability to reload while aiming down sights. While you could reload some sniper rifles while maintaining ADS using a specific weapon attachment in Black Ops 4, this is the first time the series has included the feature as a default for all weapons.

In the past, reloading pulled you out of ADS, forcing you into the default view until the reload animation completed. In contrast, the weapons in Modern Warfare will remain locked on their target even when you reload. Animation director Mark Grigsby discussed this game-changing feature in an official blog post on the Activision website.

"One other thing we added this year is the ADS [Aiming Down Sight] reload. In the past, if you're ADS, and you're shooting and you reload, the weapon would go off to the side, and you'd have to retrain to get to your target. This time if you reload, it stays on the target, so you can stay in the battle."

Beyond remaining in ADS, the reload animation players see will depend on how much ammunition you've used. Swapping out empty magazines shows the full reload and rack. If you opt for a tactical reload after shooting off a round or two, the game treats you to a different animation. The weight and type of weapon will also influence the reload process. The Modern Warfare team hopes these changes will make reloading more seamless and satisfying.

"The reload to me is the pinnacle of the weapon," said Grigsby. "In the past, we would never physically show that transition of one mag to another, but this time around, everything's physical, so if you have an extended mag, like a drum perhaps, or a long magazine, all of the movements within every reload are visceral, strong, aggressive, it gives another feeling of power and representing the Tier 1 operators that utilize these machines."

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare launches on October 25 for PC, Playstation 4, and Xbox One.
