Helldivers 2 Fans Rejoice Over Xbox Rumors
"Helldivers 2" has inspired legions of passionate fans and captured the imaginations of gamers everywhere — if "everywhere" only includes PlayStation and PC. Considering the game's overwhelming popularity, more than a few people have been wondering why it's a PS5 and PC exclusive. Wouldn't it make sense for Sony to port the game to other systems to bring in as many players as possible? According to a new rumor, that very thing might soon happen.
There's some precedent for this: The original "Helldivers" was one of the first Sony exclusives that was also available for PC gamers, and since then, Sony's opened up a surprising amount of its catalog to players who aren't using a PlayStation, including the beloved sequel. As a whole, it seems like Sony is moving to a multi-platform model with its exclusive titles, and many "Helldivers" fans are hoping there's a chance Sony will play nice with Microsoft in the near future. Getting Xbox players to fight on behalf of Super Earth would definitely help with the inevitable Illuminate invasion, but aside from Xbox boss Phil Spencer briefly mentioning in an interview that he'd like to see "Helldivers 2" on Xbox, there's been no real reason to think the crossover is actually going to happen — until now.
Is Xbox-PS5 crossplay finally happening?
Rumors about "Helldivers 2" on Xbox are really brewing now, and that's all thanks to the "XboxEra Podcast." Speaking on the podcast, co-host and gaming insider Shpeshal_Nick acknowledged that Sony has a new CEO, saying that he believes the recent change in management might herald a new openness to cross-platform gaming. Shpeshal_Nick then revealed, "There may be some very, very early — very early — preliminary discussions about the possibility of 'Helldivers 2' coming to Xbox."
While this is an exciting prospect, Shepshal_Nick goes out of his way to stress that this is nothing more than a rumor based on some things that he's heard from various industry connections. The idea isn't completely outlandish, of course. Phil Spencer clearly likes the idea of getting "Helldivers 2" on Xbox, Sony has been pushing multi-platform games more heavily, and players have been clamoring for this to happen since the game's initial release. That said, right now the news is little more than a rumor. Even though some "Helldivers" fans are going to be ecstatic about the potential of playing their favorite game with their Xbox comrades, true patriots are still checking their expectations at the door and focusing on the war at hand.
