Super Mario Maker 2 Finally Gets A Release Date
Nintendo Switch owners have been eagerly anticipating word on when they might get their hands on Super Mario Maker 2. Today, we finally have an answer.
On the company's official Twitter feed, Nintendo announced that Super Mario Maker 2 will be dropping on June 28. The game was first unveiled during a Feb. 13 Nintendo Direct and given a June release window, so now we know that was "late June" as opposed to sometime earlier in the month.
And aside from the reveal of the game's official release date, there's really not a whole lot of fresh news to share regarding the title. Super Mario Maker 2 is sort of a silly sequel, in that the game appears largely the same as the original Super Mario Maker. It will likely be very familiar to those who played that first game, aside from the new features Nintendo is adding to the toolset.
Yet you can't help but feel a bit of excitement surrounding its release.
There's something undeniably fun about taking your turn as a video game designer, piecing together the perfect Super Mario course for the world to complete. And something unapologetically evil — yet still just as fun — about building levels for your close friends to fail at time and time again.
The first Super Mario Maker unlocked the Senior Level Designer in all of us, forcing us to think about what constitutes good gameplay. And the embarrassment of riches in the online component of the game — an all-you-can-eat buffet of Mario levels — meant that you could hop on your Wii U and always have a new challenge in front of you.
That's the major draw of Super Mario Maker 2. Whether you want to create or consume, the game has something for you. And this version is bolstered by the fact that it's on the Nintendo Switch, which has already outsold the Wii U substantially. More people will be playing the levels you dream into existence. And there'll be more levels for you to download and take on the go.
Plus, there are slopes in this one.
