Rockstar Finally Confirms GTA 6 Trailer Plans

After such a long wait and one unsubstantiated leak after another, it doesn't seem real to receive official "Grand Theft Auto" news from Rockstar. It seems fans are finally going to be rewarded for their patience, however, as the AAA publisher has just revealed when fans can expect to see the trailer for the long-awaited "Grand Theft Auto 6." In an uncharacteristic move for the typically tight-lipped game-maker, Rockstar president and co-founder Sam Houser posted a lengthy social media thread looking back on the company's legacy and thanking fans for their support over the last 25 years. As a way of celebrating Rockstar's longevity, fans can expect to see the first trailer for "Grand Theft Auto 6" next month.

Rumors have been heating up surrounding an imminent "GTA 6" trailer reveal for a few months now, with many expecting Rockstar to drop the trailer in October as a Halloween celebration. Before that, gamers thought Rockstar would surely release the trailer in September, marking the 10-year anniversary of "Grand Theft Auto 5" with an exclamation point. X (formerly Twitter) lit up with activity late in the evening of November 7, when Bloomberg's Jason Schreier revealed that sources close to Rockstar had indicated that the developer would be making some sort of "GTA"-related announcement this week. Given Bloomberg's reputation, many fans on social media took this to be a near-confirmation, and it turns out they didn't have to wait long for Rockstar to weigh in. Here's what Sam Houser had to say about Rockstar's past and the future of "Grand Theft Auto" — as well as a compelling fan theory about the game's title.

Fans rejoice as Rockstar announces the GTA 6 trailer

"Next month marks the 25th anniversary of Rockstar Games. Thanks to the incredible support of our players worldwide, we have had the opportunity to create games we are truly passionate about," begins the post from Sam Houser. He continues, "We are very excited to let you know that in early December, we will release the first trailer for the next 'Grand Theft Auto.' We look forward to many more years of sharing these experiences with all of you."

So there you have it. "Grand Theft Auto" fans who have waited a decade for the next chapter in the saga can look forward to the first official glimpse of the game before the end of the year. Reactions to this news were immediately ecstatic from a vast majority of commenters. Many fans expressed the feeling that they never thought they'd get this news, and that "GTA" fans would forever be stuck on a loop of expecting a big announcement and getting more silence from Rockstar. Others seemed to have automatically replied to Rockstar and Houser's post without paying close attention to the last bit of the thread, as a number of comments hilariously still asked when they can expect to see the trailer for "GTA 6." Some celebrated the news with the internet's greatest currency: memes.

Other fans began to take notice of a particular bit of phrasing in Houser's post, which gave way to another theory: What if this new game isn't even called "Grand Theft Auto 6?"

'The next Grand Theft Auto' raises more questions

For fans who have been following the trail of bread crumbs leading to "Grand Theft Auto 6," next month's trailer won't be the first time they've seen footage from the upcoming game. Last year, approximately two hours of clips from the game were leaked by a hacker who'd managed to compromise Rockstar security. While the game has no doubt received further polish since then, this was the first look many got of what appears to be a full-fledged return to the fictional Vice City locale. But even before that leak occurred, Rockstar shocked fans by casually announcing, "we are pleased to confirm that active development for the next entry in the 'Grand Theft Auto' series is well underway."

In light of Sam Houser's post about the next game, many fans on social media have noticed that neither official post refers to the game as "Grand Theft Auto 6." Some have taken this to mean that the game may have a different title, with some even suggesting "Vice City 2" as a candidate. This would certainly make sense, as the return to Rockstar's version of Miami sure feels like an event worth marking in-title.

Whatever the title, we won't have to wait too long to find out. In just a few short weeks, Rockstar will finally treat the world to the first official trailer for the next "Grand Theft Auto" game — if it doesn't get leaked first, of course.
