Freddy Fazbear Finally Joins Mortal Kombat 1 (Sort Of)
"Mortal Kombat 1" has been a huge hit with critics and longtime fans of the series (aside from the much-maligned Nintendo Switch port), and a huge part of that popularity stems from the game's expansive roster of fighters. Not only does the game feature several returning favorites from the series' history, but upcoming DLC will introduce exciting guest characters like Omni-Man from "Invincible" and Homelander from "The Boys." One fan decided that there was one glaring omission in the game's lineup, however, and decided to take matters into their own hands — and that's how Freddy Fazbear from the hugely popular "Five Nights At Freddy's" franchise finally joined "Mortal Kombat 1."
In addition to the main cast of characters, "MK1" has incorporated Kameo Fighters into its gameplay loop. These are characters that can be called upon for an assist, popping into a match and dishing out a bit of extra punishment to the enemy. "Mortal Kombat 1" modder HiBlakkes realized that one of these Kameo Fighters, the cybernetic ninja known as Cyrax, offered the perfect opportunity to add Freddy Fazbear to the latest tournament. As it turns out, the killer animatronic bandleader is a near-perfect fit for the "Mortal Kombat" universe.
Freddy Fazbear brings the pain in Mortal Kombat 1
As seen in a hilarious clip from Mike Monty on YouTube, this mod replaces Cyrax's character model with a sleek-looking Freddy Fazbear that maintains Cyrax's move-set in battle. This works surprisingly well, since many of Cyrax's special moves are tech-based. Much like Freddy Fazbear is known in his own games for grabbing and grinding up victims, the Freddy/Cyrax hybrid can be seen sawing through enemies and putting them in a terrifying "bear hug." To top things off, Freddy even executes Cyrax's most infamous Fatality, dropping a payload of bombs from his chest and blowing up the entire Earth.
The modded character model isn't entirely perfect, as Cyrax's sash can be seen poking out of the bear's midsection in some shots, but the result has nonetheless been a huge hit with fans of both franchises. One fan commented, "As much as this makes no sense lorewise, I love this kind of mod." Another gamer jokingly tried to tie Freddy's appearance to the rebooted universe seen in "MK1," quipping, "Man, Liu Kang's new era is really weird."
Oddly enough, the idea of combining these two franchises isn't a new one: Back when "Mortal Kombat 11" came out, one fan even went to the trouble of photoshopping a fake DLC announcement for Freddy Fazbear as a playable Kombatant. If you're looking for a way to celebrate the release of the "Five Nights At Freddy's" movie and make "Mortal Kombat 1" a little bit weirder in the process, you owe it to yourself to give this wacky mod a go.
