How To Find The Secret 'Chris Houlihan' Room In The Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past
"The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past" is one of the biggest trendsetters in gaming history. The SNES classic pretty much laid out the entire framework for what the "Zelda" series would be from that point on with its fantastic world design, impeccable animation, and plethora of secrets and collectibles that can be found all over through careful exploration. Regularly talked about among the best games of all time, "The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past" is the quintessential Zelda installment, offering a ton of replayability for those who want to find everything in the game.
In fact, some fans may not know that there is a top-secret room hidden in multiple places throughout the overworld of the game, one that rewards players handsomely. Chris Houlihan's room calls for some very particular methods to locate in the Nintendo classic, and we're going to break down one such method below.
The room is said to be an honorarium to a Nintendo prize winner
Chris Houlihan's room is a special coding fail-safe room that players can end up at when "The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past" gets a little discombobulated and can't get Link's coordinates right on the map anymore. The room is purported to be the reward for Nintendo Power reader Chris Houlihan, who is believed to have won a contest to have his name put into a game (via TheGamer).
As noted by MaddHats on YouTube, there are several different ways to glitch your way into the secret room, though all of them are very deliberately difficult to access. One of the easier ways to access it is for players to begin from The Sanctuary in the Light World version of Hyrule. From there, the player must make their way left one screen and up two screens until they are next to the lumberjack's cabin. From there, you just need to charge into the fake tree with the off-colored leaves to show the secret entrance. After that, stand with Link facing outward and away from the tree and equip the bombs. Now the player simply needs to drop a bomb in front of them and wait for the explosion to knock Link backward into the hole.
If done correctly, you will find yourself in a room filled with blue rupees, rather than the secret that was originally supposed to be hidden there in "The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past." The room also contains a telepathic tile in the back, which announces that it is Chris Houlihan's secret room. Have you managed to accidentally access this mysterious place before?
