The Witcher Fans Rocked By Henry Cavill's Series Exit
Netflix's "The Witcher" has already seen two seasons, with "The Witcher" Season 3 slated to release next summer. Though that offering has yet to air, Netflix has already greenlit a fourth season as well, a bittersweet development due to the other news that broke with the reveal: Henry Cavill will soon leave the series and hand off the role of Geralt of Rivia to Liam Hemsworth.
Both actors responded to the announcement on October 29, with Cavill expressing appreciation for his time as Geralt and offering support and encouragement for Hemsworth going forward. Showing his great love of the character, Cavill wrote that he will "pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam's take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men." For his part, Hemsworth stated that he was "over the moon" to be taking over as Geralt. He also had nothing but kind words for his predecessor, praising Cavill's take on the character and emphasizing his excitement at stepping into the role as the show moves forward.
Despite the optimism expressed by Cavill and Hemsworth, fans reacted to the development with a mix of emotions on social media.
Henry Cavill's exit shocks and confuses The Witcher fans
Given how much fans have loved Cavill as Geralt in "The Witcher," word of the recasting left many people upset. Some expressed surprise and disappointment at losing Cavill, while others experienced deep sadness. Certain individuals simply wanted to know the reason Cavill had chosen to step away from such a great part. According to Deadline, Cavill may have decided to leave "The Witcher" due to a busy schedule of upcoming projects. Cavill recently donned Superman's suit once more and confirmed his return to the DCEU, an endeavor that could take up most of his time for the foreseeable future.
While fans have expressed a great deal of love for Cavill and his interpretation of Geralt of Rivia, Liam Hemsworth has also found some support online. Hemswroth has previous experience training for intense roles and many remember him for his work in the "Hunger Games" franchise. Much like his brother, Chris Hemsworth, who carved out a place for himself in the MCU as Thor, Liam will soon portray an iconic character rooted in Nordic mythology and fantasy. With the switch not happening until Season 4, "The Witcher" fans will get to enjoy one more season with Cavill before discovering how Hemsorth does as the titular protagonist.
