The Dark Backstory Of Poké-Man's Best Friend
The Pokémon Company and Game Freak have revealed another new Pokémon from the Paldea region, where the upcoming "Pokémon Scarlet and Violet" take place. This new ghost-type Pokémon is a dog, with long, shaggy white hair and a candle sticking out of the top of its head. While the new Greavard Pokémon is incredibly cute, it has a sinister nature, according to a tweet from the "Pokémon Scarlet and Violet" account. "Greavard will slowly and inadvertently absorb the life-force of those around it," the tweet reads, implying that if you hang out with a Greavard for too long you might end up dead.
In a first-person YouTube video teasing Greavard, a person is searching through the Paldea region at night and encounters a few different ghost-type Pokémon before coming across Greavard. They quickly find it adorable and begin to play with it, but after some time their energy is drained and they collapse. It's not immediately clear if the camera operator is dead or just drained, nor is it clear if the Greavard knowingly does this to people. It is possible that Greavard is unaware of the effect it has on people. Game Freak released a second video, showing Greavard in-game and in combat, revealing its capabilities as a ghost-type Pokémon.
The official "Pokémon" website gave additional info on Greavard, explaining that it often hides In the snow, letting its candle hint at its presence. The site also explained that the new ghost-type quickly becomes lonely, but its mysterious powers doom it to a life of isolation. Despite its deadly nature and dark backstory, people have seemingly been won over by Greavard's cuteness.
People think Greavard is adorable, despite the fact that it will kill you
Despite Greavard possibly killing a person in its reveal trailer, fans seem to love the adorable new ghost-type Pokémon. One person on Twitter wrote "aww man; its on the team now for sure," sharing a section from the official Pokémon website that mentions that Greavards get lonely. Other fans were excited about having a "best boy" ghost-type to have on their team when the games release. A few people weren't happy with the design, calling it lazy and arguing that it's just a dog with a candle on its head.
While some fans are duking it out to decide if Greavard is cute or not, Reddit users are a bit concerned about some of the marketing materials for the latest Pokémon games. "If I had a nickel for every time an unnamed trainer died in a ghost type Pokemon's reveal trailer, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice," user Fork_Master wrote, referencing a trailer for "Pokémon Legends: Arceus" where another trainer was seemingly killed by something spooky. "Pokémon Scarlet and Violet" release on Nov. 18 and early previews for the game suggest that the new games are changing the formula in positive ways.
